Medical Wisdom Project

Our Founder

Ed Morgan was a respected charity CEO in New York City who decided to become a later-in-life contrarian after watching the unnecessary death of his father and hearing medical train wreck stories from his friends. Stories morphed into advice and then he discovered that distinguished medical reformers had been warning about the direction of American medicine for over 20 years. Politely ignored by colleagues, the 40 or so reformation books went nowhere. The money-machine fix was in.

Ed loves a cause bigger than himself and decided not to reform a profession (not happening!) but to educate his family and friends. One thing led to another, and a book appeared for wider audiences.

Of course, being a man of faith, he does think threads running through his life prepared him for this – among them his lifelong admiration for contrarians, outsiders who saw a critical need. Rachel Carson, Ralph Nader, and Fred Kummerow come to mind.

Fred who? Professor Fred Kummerow at the University of Illinois knew trans-fats were killing people but the FDA was in bed with the food industry and wouldn’t admit it. Finally, in his nineties, Fred sued the FDA and won. Trans-fats are now out almost gone in our foods.

Hanging out with Jack Welch at GE didn’t hurt either in developing a contrarian way of thinking. Ed was there 19 years serving Jack and other top officers in communications.

And then he was at the Bowery Mission for 22 years reviving the reputation of an almost dead charity – leading to a renaissance of funding, program effectiveness and visibility.

Ed grew up in Princeton, NJ, has a philosophy degree from Rutgers (that used to be an oxymoron but no more), an MS in Communications from University of Illinois, served as a US Air Force Officer in the Vietnam Era and has been married to Judy for over 50 years. They have three sons and 10 grandchildren.

Ed is enjoying his friendship with doctors, many privately cheering him on and a few publicly endorsing his book. He recognizes there are so many caring, compassionate, wise practitioners out there feeling trapped by the current system.

And he loves being a small peripheral part of the general aviation flying community – a place where camaraderie survives. Flying for yourself, as they say around small airport FBOs, is the most fun you can have.

But one of his main pleasures now is seeing friends and acquaintances make wise medical decisions and be so grateful that they did.
